Healthy Dental Habits for Halloween

Dental Tips for a Healthy Halloween

Halloween is right around the corner, which means easy access to candy and sweet treats of all kinds. From the office candy dish to your child’s trick-or-treating haul, the sugary temptation is everywhere this time of year. Most adults know that overeating sugar can lead to tooth decay and other oral health problems. However, by practicing healthy dental habits, you and your kids can enjoy Halloween treats without fear.

Healthy Dental Habits

Dr. Ameer Eghbarieh, DMD has been practicing dentistry on for over 15  years and says there is no need to be afraid of enjoying a few sweet treats in moderation this time of year. “Most dental disease is entirely preventable,” said Dr. Eghbarieh “Establishing healthy dental habits as a child and continuing them through adulthood is important. With regular brushing, flossing, and checkups, you can drastically reduce your risk of gum disease and cavities,” he continued.

According to Dr. Eghbarieh and the American Dental Association, there are several steps you can take to keep your mouth healthy and enjoy the treats of the season. First, always brush your teeth two times per day for at least two minutes. Regular brushing will help reduce plaque and cavity-causing bacteria that feeds off of sugar. Flossing is another healthy habit that will keep your teeth clean and lower your risk of tooth decay. Brushing alone can’t reach all of the surfaces between your teeth where bacteria can hide.

Choose Candy Carefully

Next, be strategic about the type of treats you enjoy and time of day you eat them. Chewy candy like gummy bears, taffy, and caramels can stick to your teeth longer than other types of candy and cause more damage. If you’re going to enjoy something sticky, drink lots of water and keep a toothbrush on hand to brush when you are done.

Limiting the amount of candy you consume in a day and avoiding other sources of sugar like juice and soda can also help you enjoy Halloween treats while keeping your mouth healthy. Store candy earned from trick-or-treating in the freezer and set a date to dispose or donate any that has not been eaten by that date. This will help you get back on track and ensure extra sugar doesn’t stay a big part of your diet for too long.

Lastly, don’t trick yourself into thinking your annual checkups and cleanings can’t be a treat for the whole family. At Lihue Dental Dr. Allen offers caring and gentle dentistry for the entire family. From convenient cleanings and checkups to same-day emergency care, local families have trusted Dr. Allen and the Lihue Dental team to keep smiles healthy and bright for more than 30 years.
